Then the miracle happened. From the other side of the door there had come a tiny mew. I could not believe it. But there it was again, faint but unmistakable, the strange unearthly music of the Siamese cat. I pushed open the door. There, trying to sit up in his basket, swaying unsteadily, blinking in the sunlight, was 'One'. He had fought his way out of the valley of the shadow.

But that was seven years ago. Seven years in the life of a cat is fifty years in the life of a man. It could not be like that again.
